Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he liked taking part in numerous card games at a young age. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would regularly challenge one another. He had access into some of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL hold’em.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. He told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker world ever. Howard headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
