Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha hi/lo starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many players get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical concept in nearly every poker game.
The low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem complex initially, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting collection of betting choices and because you have several players trying for the high, along with several battling for the low hand.
