Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he loved participating in various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York to play some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he would play many hours and do not win most times. He earned some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and concentrate more on the game.

The definite improvement in his abilities began when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would regularly challenge each other. Howard was able to access several of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, he would hone his strategic thinking abilities. He used these strategy concepts in the game of NL hold’em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world today. Howard Lederer headed to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and played money games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
